So, what is on my plate?

Welcome to my blog!

After seeing the movie, Julie and Julia this past summer, I became obsessed with the concept of blogging. I've been doing a fair amount of research and reading a lot of blogs lately. And today, I am taking action. It’s time to share my experiences, pass on what I’ve learned and talk about MY wonderful world… A world of running a business, being in a family business, marketing, public speaking, family life, the produce industry (to name a few) and Frieda’s Specialty Produce.

Actually, our company name is “Frieda’s, Inc.” It was started by my mother (Frieda Caplan) back in 1962 , and after she introduced Kiwifruit to America (really, she did!)…well the rest, as they say, is history.

I started working with my mom when I was about 14 years old (working summers and vacations). I joined the company full time in 1977, after college. So, I’ve been fortunate to have been right beside my mom as she grew the company. There are so many stories. So many new fruits and veggies that we’ve introduced over the years. Like Purple Potatoes, Spaghetti Squash, Sugar Snap Peas… You name it – we’ve probably marketed it.

In fact, some say we’ve changed the way America eats! And we’ve adopted that as our mission. Go Mom!

So, a few times a week, I will be sharing "what's on my plate" -- stories, thoughts, happenings in the produce world, and food for thought.

Have an awesome day!

Karen

  5. Karen,
I look forward to this blog as a good balance to all the "Local" emphasis. Your organization has done a lot to diversify our diets and that is every bit as important as any advantage from local. It really shouldn't be an either/or question anyway. I always look forward to the Frieda's booth at PMA!
